Career Opportunities for Women in Computing
Academia or industry? Balancing acts for women building careers in computing
An introductory mentoring talk, for undergraduates and graduate students.
Abstract
Draft, not yet checked by meA mentoring session on navigating a career in academia or industry, which I gave online for women students at the ACM India Winter School on Security, Privacy and Trust. There is an icebreaker built around the game of trust, and I work through the balancing acts that shape a research career: breadth versus depth, persevering versus pivoting, saying yes versus saying no, and perfect versus good enough, with quotes and advice from other academics. I also talk about the people who can help (advisors, peers, friends, family, and a professional network), and there is an open Q&A.
