Building a Personal Website

Why to have your own corner of the internet, and how to build it

Web publishing · Communication

An introductory workshop, for undergraduates and graduate students.

Abstract

Draft, not yet checked by me

A hands-on workshop on building a personal website: your own corner of the internet, rather than a scattered footprint across social media, blogging platforms, and academic profile pages. I cover why a site is worth having (control over layout and content, longevity, being findable, and a home for things you would otherwise explain again and again), a tour of favourite personal websites, content ideas like a /now page and a news section, and options ranging from Google Sites and Notion to static site generators like Quarto and Hugo hosted on GitHub Pages or Netlify, with notes on accessibility and security. Everyone builds one.
