Algorithmic Fairness in Resource Allocation
What does it mean to share indivisible things fairly, and when can algorithms do it?
An introductory survey, for graduate students and up.
Abstract
Draft, not yet checked by meHow should indivisible resources be shared among people who value them differently, so that the outcome is fair? I introduce the algorithmic view of fair division: why a perfectly envy-free outcome need not exist when items cannot be split, which relaxed notions of fairness researchers use instead, and how fairness can trade off against overall welfare. I also show where fair allocations can be computed efficiently and where the problem is provably hard.
