Current Research Directions in Fair Division

What fairness means for cake and for indivisible items, and which questions are open

Fair division · Computational social choice

An introductory survey, for a general audience.

Abstract

As published with the recording, October 2021

Have you ever wondered about how to cut a cake in a way that makes everyone happy? It's easy to do when the cake is nice and uniform, but when different people like different parts of the cake, dividing it fairly is a trickier issue. The cake is a useful abstraction for various real-world problems, ranging from land to water to compute resources on a machine, and so on. I will introduce the problem of fair division with an emphasis on the setting of indivisible items and talk about some open problems in the area.
